Subject: [Critical/Emergency ALL-LIST] Update Regarding Student Arrest

Last weekend, on the way back to campus for the spring semester, one of our students was arrested when New York State Police stopped him for speeding and found him to be in possession of a number of weapons. He was charged with
fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, and then released.

SUNY Plattsburgh considers campus safety a top priority. As with any incident involving a real or perceived threat, the college has taken steps to assess the situation and its potential impact on our community. We are extremely sensitive to situations that may represent a threat to the safety of our students, faculty and staff.

Other pertinent information:

* The weapons from the student’s car were confiscated by the New York State Police. The weapons in question did not arrive with the student on campus.

* At the time of the report, University Police opened an investigation of the incident. Additionally, with the student’s consent, University Police conducted a search of the student’s room and vehicle.

* The student in question has been cooperative with college officials and has relocated.

* The college has learned that the court date for his Jan. 26 arrest was continued from Jan. 31 to Feb. 14.

* Due to student record privacy laws, the college cannot comment on specific cases that may go through the campus discipline process. Nor can the college report the results of any campus discipline process.

* Students are encouraged to speak with their Resident Assistant (RA) if they have questions.
