The Ruffed Grouse

Ruffed Grouse - Bonasa umbellus
Ruffed Grouse – Bonassa umbellus Large Image (2.72 Mb)

I just read over at Adirondack Lifestyle about her encounter with a Ruffed Grouse.  I also had an encounter with one last Saturday, but it was far less violent.  We were cleaning up around some old stone walls when “JT” heard a strange noise – sort of a thrumming.  Well, about 2 feet in front of his face he spotted this nesting grouse.  Normally, these birds take-off pretty quick, but this one would not move.

Birds are great…for eating! If there was such a thing as an “Adirondack Chicken”, then this is it.  I haven’t had the pleasure.  When it comes to appreciating birds, most would agree that Audubon is a good reference.  I’ve always found his descriptions to be a wonderful read, only lacking in recipes:

Our Great National Playground

May 20th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Adirondack Life

The Adirondacks - Our Great National PlaygroundMemorial Weekend is the traditional beginning of our Summer travel season here in the Adirondacks.

It’s not like we will be overrun, but most popular trailheads will be packed.

Plan ahead, check the Current Conditions, and consider hiking trails outside the High Peaks Area. Stay Safe – maybe I’ll see ya out there!

DIED Dec. 21 1849This cemetery contains buried victims of a Small Pox “problem” in the mid-1800s. The Blockhouse that stood at this site served as a medical building.

Life is much easier these days.

Twitter Reciprocity and #followfriday

May 1st, 2009 · 3 Comments · Adirondack Life

Today is Friday.  All you Twitter folks know what that means, #followfriday is the fashionable meme of the day. This post is LIVE DONE.

Follow me on TwitterDon’t get me wrong, I super-appreciate every recommendation I get, but I haven’t felt like playing along with the Friday-thing.  Why?  There’s no meta to go with the recommendation.  For me, it’s all about the Semantic Web.  The data is there, what information can we assign to it?  Same with users.  I wish the ability to tag Twitter users was something I could do, instead of relying on self-tags.

Enough with the Twitter navel-gazing, I’ll save that for another time.  Today is about you, my Twitter-people.

Lake Champlain Beaches

April 29th, 2009 · No Comments · Adirondack Life

The last few days of unseasonably warm weather has started what I would call “Beach Fever”. My personal favorite is Point au Roche, followed by Ausable Point.

Here are the public beaches on the New York side of Lake Champlain.

There are a handful of other small beaches, but they are either “secret” or limited to local residents. So, does anyone want to join me for some fun at the beach?
