Hiking Noonmark

September 15th, 2009 · 9 Comments · Adirondack Life

(Large Map)

We did our traditional birthday hike on Sunday up Noonmark. I love this peak for it’s epic views. When we arrived at the top, it was totally socked in by clouds. Just as we decided to descend, the clouds parted and we were able to enjoy The Great Range, Dix, Round Mt, Dial, and “look down” on those Ausable Club folks.

Park at the Round Pond trailhead parking area on Route 73. Then it’s 3.4 miles to the top via Round Pond and the Felix Adler trail.

Northern Adirondacks – Early Fall Foliage

August 27th, 2009 · 4 Comments · Adirondack Life

No shortage of inquiries about Adirondack Fall foliage lately. Here’s another list like last year’s, this time with inexpensive and family-friendly places worth visiting in the Northern Adirondacks.

Last night hit 34 degrees in Saranac Lake and we still have days to go in August. Most people aren’t into “foliage-mode” until October, but here in the Northern Adirondacks things happen early. This means we get leaf change as early as mid-September. For sure at the higher elevations.

Debar Mountain

“Debar Mountain, a savage looking peak…”

Eh, it’s really not that savage, rather nice actually. We had never done this climb and thought it would make an easy weekend overnight trip. I don’t really like to do the High Peaks during Summer because I have a slight allergy to people when I head into the woods. This one is off the beaten path and definitely sees less traffic. Probably, the day-use fee also deters folks as most of the people we saw were staying in the campground.

From the Meacham Lake Campground trailhead, it is 3.7 miles to the summit. Just before the really steep final ascent, there is a rather worn Lean-to where we spent the night.

Sable Highlands – Interim Recreation Management Plan

May 8th, 2009 · No Comments · News

Wednesday’s meeting at the Saranac Town Hall was at full-capacity. I think every chair in the building was being used for this informational meeting introducing the NYS DEC’s Interim Recreation Management Plan for the Sable Highlands conservation easement Public Use Areas and Linear Recreation Corridors. Simply put, NYS has purchased conservation easements on privately owned land and is charged with the implementation and management of public recreational use.
