Adirondack Rail Controversy

May 23rd, 2013 · No Comments · Adirondack Life

Rail or Trail or “First-world Problem”?

All the “very cool, passionate, community-minded people” on both sides seem to have ignored a third-option – Rail-biking.

Richard B. did this back in the 90′s – A Ride on the Adirondack Railway.

Non-motorized Re-Use. Leave the tracks. Get rid of the train. A healthy, cost-efficient, and non-polluting activity.

Look what they are doing in Korea – www.oceanrailbike.com.

As far as I can tell from my very brief research, Lake Placid, NY to Remsen, NY could be the longest Rail-biking trip in the world. Ride On!

Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, UK, and FRANCE!!

Enjoy these Rail-biking videos.

Anyway, don’t do this here – you could get injured or die.
It might be illegal too, you could get arrested.

1 Year Anniversary Review Grant

December 16th, 2010 · 4 Comments · News

Quad LogoComing just 1 year after the questionably successful Lake Champlain Quadricentennial, it’s just been announced that “review grants” are available for application. Grants to review the 2009 event.

The National Heritage Partnership is now offering up to $100,000 for the Legacy Program. Individual grants up to $10,000 will be available for programs designed to capture the atmosphere of the 2009 celebration.

“This will probably be the last go around, the last opportunity for Quad funding … focusing on archival and conservation work for the different reports and programs that were created for the Quad.” (Link)

It seems too unbelievable to be fake. I have a simple and cheap suggestion – A Good Website.

Playing Chicken with Parks

May 28th, 2010 · 3 Comments · News

We have big “Parks” and little “parks”. In case you haven’t heard, New York State is having a bit of a fiscal issue. While the rest of our “system” languishes in a limbo of budget-extenders, Department of Environmental Conservation and Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation fought their own battle and “won” a small victory.

Every organization with a stake in state budget negotiations is doing the same with mixed results. You could say that I’m one of those “mixed results”. And like most things in life, there are two sides of the coin.

Update: Mountain Visions recognizes this game.
Legislature Successfully Defends Paterson’s Assualt On EPF

Paterson tossed a grenade into the assembly and senate chambers and waited for someone to dive on it. Of course there probably isn’t one upstanding human being in the legislature, so they did the only thing they could, they tossed the EPF on it to save themselves.

DEC to Close Forest Roads

May 6th, 2010 · No Comments · News

Forest Preserve - State LandToo lazy and slightly shocked to copy, paste and spiff-up the press release. Brian already posted most of the details over at The In Box.

Funny thing, I’m not sure this is really a bad thing. No motorized access to the Moose River Plains? Doesn’t really bum me out too much.
