Two Steps back, One Step Forward – City beach to reinstate swimming

Apparently the TourPro wasn’t alone in questioning the closing of the Plattsburgh City Beach to swimming this summer. After deciding to cull lifeguards from the beach budget, it seems now that revenues from other recreational programs will be sufficient to support swimming at the beach. Mayor Dan Stewart announced that swimming would now be included in the beach’s inventory of activities, albeit at a reduced schedule and capacity.

After a minor rant about the wisdom of prohibiting swimming at the Plattsburgh City Beach, this morning’s editorial in our local press seems to echo many of my concerns. It almost seems like someone there actually ‘gets it’, but stops just short of pointing out the fact that there is economic impact from beach visitation.

No Swimming Sm Update: City beach to reinstate swimming

It’s been awhile, but today’s news has woken the TourPro out of a late-Winter doldrum.

The alleged “city by the lake” has made another interesting strategic decision and I’m afraid tourism has again gotten the short end of the stick. Due to increasing costs of operation, the city has been forced to increase property taxes by almost a third. Yesterday’s news was the elimination of the 4th of July fireworks. Well, we are keeping the Mayor’s Cup fireworks which happens a few days later. The fireworks, hmmm, not so much of a big deal and frankly watching those dollars go up in flames does seem a bit wasteful.
