The announcement of the Public Meeting about the Hoffman Notch Wilderness Area – Draft Unit Management Plan didn’t really catch my interest until I had a look at the documents. The thing that’s notable is the lack of anything.
The DEC’s Unit Management Plans are a huge source of information about the various places in the NYS Forest Preserve. Particularly the maps.
Relatively remote, few access points, currently one main-trail, and few “facilities”. Plus, they’re not really planning on doing much else in the future. Check it out (Large Image):

The latest report of Adirondack search and rescue incidents is a good sampling of the usual hijinks, with snow and cold temperatures thrown in for fun:

Glad to hear about all the successful rescues and finds, but we’re still missing a couple people.
- Still Missing – Francine Marcel. (and Wesley)
- Two ladies found after prompt and effective search.
- Hunter injured by ATV. Really lucky to be in earshot of people.
- Evening hunt. Is that even legal?
- “out by 6pm” in November leaves no room for safety.
- Someone from Wuxi City….that’s cool.

- Cellphones are not survival tools.
