It’s true, we did ride near a jail and yes, there was a break. Unfortunately the break occurred between myself and the rest of the 5-man group for the last official Mountain Goat Climb.
Living in the Last Great Wilderness of the Northeast and in an area called the Adirondack Mountains, you’d think we could come up with some killer hill climbs. Oh how we wish that were true. We’ve got plenty of short and even sharp climbs, but long and sustained grinds are hard to find. Thanks to Adam (AKA the Wrench) for herding the goats and introducing us all to some fun riding in Clinton County. Our final climb might be the jewel of the area – Dannemora Mt. via the Nashville-Hugh Hearn Rd.

Update Again: The Point Resort is back open for business.
Update: Hi all you PBS watching Adirondack Fans! Just so ya know, The Point was sold.
The Point was again mentioned as one of the world’s most luxurious and costly hotels. Anyone else, sick of hearing this? In all reality, for 99% of the existing world, this place doesn’t even exist. I’m not proud though, you can still donate to my Camp Fund (sidebar).
The Point, a Relais & Chateaux property in the Adirondacks that was once a Rockefeller Great Camp, has just 11 rooms, each with lake views and a chiseled-stone fireplace. Included in the room rate, which starts at $1,250 a night and puts it on our list of the priciest hotels, are activities such as fishing, horseback riding and golfing. All meals and alcoholic beverages are covered; guests fill out a dining survey weeks in advance of their stay to ensure that their desires are catered to.

This little ride initially was focused on Priest Rd which The Wrench believed to be of Mountain Goat caliber. Well, much like everything else in life, all is relative. The third member of our trio was a highly motivated cyclist who I’ll call The Schoolmaster. I’m not sure about The Wrench, but I believe The Schoolmaster might be someone who appreciates self-flagellation by bike.
The evening was warm and earlier threat of thunderstorms did not materialize. Riding with new people is always interesting. There’s the social aspect, but also the physical and mental aspect of casual-competitive group-riding. Sometimes I wish we could leave the chatting part for a different setting as I find it sometimes can be distracting and possibly dangerous. Fortunately we enjoy relatively trafficless roads around here. I could go on about this aspect of riding, but it might start sounding gay – not that there’s anything wrong with that.
