Lodge v. Inn – Close Battle Mirror Lake Wins

January 8th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Destination Marketing

I know all you jet-setting leisure travelers have been waiting all year for The List to come out – well, here it is:

T+L 500 World’s Best Hotel 2009

Lake Placid - View from the Lake Placid Lodge

Lake Placid - View from the Lake Placid Lodge

These sorts of places, even if they were within my meager budget, would not be my choice for a travel experience.  But that’s just me.  I have no idea how these were chosen or if the voting is Carter-approved, but I’d be willing to bet a shoe-shine and valet-parking that most any “willing” hotel could make this gargantuan list.

Maybe I’m just being cynical.

In any case, two of our local standouts have made the list.  The Mirror Lake Inn and the Lake Placid Lodge both get a mention.  The Inn beat the Lodge by just shy of one point.  Clearly MLI’s superior PR tactics gave them the extra edge in beating what I would say is the nicest place within the Blue Line.  One thing for sure, I’ll take an 84 in Lake Placid over a 95 in India any day.

Postcards From the Past

January 5th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Adirondack Life

Ephemera is fun.  Check out the Penny Postcards over at the USGenWeb Archives.  I suppose the fancy photo-sharing sites make our life better, but I miss the old days.  (Gads, am I that old?)

These postcards cost 1¢ to mail. Postage was temporarily raised to 2¢ from 1917 to 1919 to cover the cost of World War I & from 1925 to 1928 (not sure the reason for the latter).

Here are some of my Adirondack and Lake Champlain favorites:

Here are links to our Adirondack Counties:

Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Herkimer, Lewis, St Lawrence, Warren.
