Status of DEC Recreational Facilities in the Adirondacks for 2011 Memorial Day Weekend

Clinton County

  • Ausable Point Campground and Day Use Area and access road

Essex County

  • Mountain bikers should avoid using the Flume Bike Trail System in Wilmington to prevent damaging it

Hamilton County

  • Moose River Plains Road System, gates are closed at Limekiln Lake and Cedar River Flow
  • Cedar River Road is also closed near its terminus, preventing motorized access to the campsites near Wakely Dam and the Cedar River Headquarters
  • Old Military Road and Jessup River Road, preventing motor vehicle access to the Pillsbury Mountain and Spruce Lake trailheads

Herkimer County

  • Haskell-West River Road along the West Canada Creek from Route 8 into the Black River Wild Forest

Warren County

  • Old Farm Road near Thirteenth Lake, preventing motor vehicle access to the trailhead – park at the snowplow turnaround
  • Lily Pond Road near Brant Lake
  • Jabe Pond Road near Hague
  • Gay Pond Road in the Hudson River Recreation Area.

Washington County

  • Dacy Clearing Road

  • Upper and Lower Locks on the Saranac Lakes Chain
  • Corey’s Road which accesses the western High Peaks from State Route 3
  • Madwaska Flow Road on the Santa Clara Tract Conservation Easement Lands
  • Pinnacle Road on the Santa Clara Tract Conservation Easement Lands

Hamilton County

  • Perkins Clearing Road north of Speculator
  • Lake Lila Road in the William C. Whitney Wilderness, the road is still rough in some areas – use caution

Herkimer County

  • Wolf Lake Landing Road in the hamlet of McKeever is only open to high clearance vehicles

Warren County

  • Lake George (Million Dollar) Beach
  • Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Toll Road in Lake George
  • River Road in the Hudson River Recreation Area, however it is muddy and rutted
  • Two designated campsites at Scofield Flats and two designated campsites at Pikes Beach in the Hudson River Recreation Area are currently restricted to day use only.

Chicks Rock! Coming to Keene Valley

Chicks ClimbingRidgway, CO – Chicks Climbing is excited to announce a partnership with Sterling Rope to bring a short format Chicks Rock! weekend course to the Keene Valley Aug. 19-21.

“The Adirondacks are far from the Chicks Climbing home base in Ridgway, Colo., but since we have had hundreds of East Coast gals fly west to participate in Chicks Climbing events for many years, we thought it was only fair to bring our weekend Sterling Rope ‘Girly Gatherings’ out east,” said Head Chick, Kim Reynolds. “Here, in the beautiful Keene Valley our participants will get the same high-level Chicks instruction we are known for in a short-format course that is close to home.”

Empire State Winter Games 2012 event dates revealed

Empire State Winter GamesLAKE PLACID, NY – The Empire State Winter Games organizing committee is pleased to announce that next year’s event will be held February 2-5.

The 2012 event will be longer than in previous years. The action will be extended from three to four days in order to accommodate an expanded field of sports and to allow time for a new educational component for student athletes, an addition based on the Youth Olympic Winter Games model. The event will include a torch run leading up to the opening ceremonies on Friday and a Festival of the Games celebration on Saturday.

“Last year, we were able to raise enough funds to ensure the Games would go on, and we were fortunate that the State had prepaid for some of the medals and uniforms,” said Craig Randall, Mayor of Lake Placid. “This year we are planning a bigger event for the athletes, and we’re starting from scratch and will incur larger costs, so we are launching a proactive fundraising effort now to secure sponsors.”

For more than 30 years, the Empire State Winter Games have provided athletes of all ages the opportunity to compete in the largest multi-sport amateur athletic winter sporting event in North America.

In 2011, a regional coalition collectively stepped forward to ensure that the event would be held following the announcement that budgetary constraints would force the cancellation of the competitions. An organizing committee representing the coalition includes officials from the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Olympic Regional Development Authority, Essex County, Villages of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake, and Towns of Harrietstown, North Elba, St. Armand and Wilmington.
