Updated Info Current Interior Conditions in the Adirondack High Peaks Region

ADIRONDACK BACKCOUNTRY ADVISORY

Please be advised that due to recent heavy rains the following conditions exist in the backcountry of the Adirondacks:

  • Water levels are high in streams, rivers, ponds and lakes.
  • Low water crossings may not be accessible
  • Trails along waterways, and in low areas, may be flooded.
  • All trails are muddy and puddled.
  • Additional blowdown, down or bent over trees and limbs, may be found on trails.

Hikers and campers should be have rain gear, appropriate foot wear, and waterproof storage for all gear and clothing.

Don’t hike or camp alone, and provide your travel plans and Forest Ranger emergency contact number with someone at home.

Be aware of your abilities and surrounding conditions and be willing to turn back if conditions exceed your abilities.

NOTES:

The Moose River Plains is CLOSED to motor vehicles until sometime next week due to road flooding and washouts.

Conditions are SEVERE in Fulton County and southern Hamilton County, roads and trails are flooded and washed out. Hikers and campers are advised to not enter the backcountry in this area; reschedule activities for a future date when conditions have improved.

A Message to all Adirondack Spring Hikers

Spring conditions reign in the North Country. Recent rains have not been enough to call for a formal mud advisory, but there are still concerns regarding trail conditions. Many Canadians have been observed heading South and recent strengthening of the Loonie has everyone looking for a big rush. In anticipation of a busy couple of weekends, the Region 5 NYS DEC has targeted Canadian traffic with some general reminders in regards to hiking and camping in the Adirondacks. I think this is a good bit to spread around in general.

The Hiking is Prime

Thanks for NewYorkology for the mention and the reminder that early season hiking is in full swing. Just got off the phone with our local Department of Conservation and they confirm that there has been no formal warning for mud closures as of yet. Trail conditions in the High Peaks are reported to be ‘frosty’. If we can get past the next couple of weeks without heavy rain, there is a good possiblility we may not have our traditional ‘mud season‘.
