The Beekmantown Gateway Information Center is located on I-87 (The Northway) Southbound between Exits 41 and 40 at the rest area. We are an official “I Love NY” Gateway Information Welcome Center. Did you know we’ve got more than just everything you wanted to know about New York? We’ve got Birds! So if your on your way South, stop in and have a look.
Beginning the Spring of 2006, the staff has identified the following birds:
- Black-capped Chickadee
- Hairy Woodpecker
- Downy Woodpecker
- Red-breasted Nuthatch
- White-breasted Nuthatch
- Cedar Waxwing
- American Crow
- Blue Jay
- Northern Cardinal
- Dark-eyed Junco (locally known as Slate-backed)
- American Robin
- Song Sparrow
- Ruffed Grouse (April 5 – Rare sighting outside my office window!)
We’ve got a suet feeder on the North side of the building and seed feeders on the South. Most of these birds were sighted from inside the building. During the Spring, the birds are active most of the day and are easily viewed. Stop in for a free cup of coffee courtesy of Wendy’s of Plattsburgh. Add to my list and I’ll hook you up with an Adirondacks patch.
