Plattsburgh Comfort Inn Burns

Update: Comfort Inn gets OK for rebuild
Comfort Inn Complex to Reopen by Summer
Comfort Inn lawsuit filed

So, our routine trip to the hardware store was interupted by FIRE.  According to Dwight, the cook at Perkins, the fire started in the pool/sauna area after some type of power surge.  When we arrived on the scene, only the southern end of the complex was noticeably burning (Huge flames leaping into the air).  Soon we saw emergency response from Keeseville, Saranac, Chazy, Beekmantown….  Despite their efforts, the fire quickly spread to the lobby area and finally all the through Legends (the bar) and into Perkins.  I’d say the whole place is done.

Here’s a quick-look, a video, and a slideshow, more pictures after the jump:

One-way Traffic is the Way to Go

June 4th, 2008 · No Comments · Adirondack Life

Update: Council opts to keep traffic two-way

Councilors voted 5 to 1 against the change, citing the impact it would have on the surrounding area and the potential to increase hazards rather than decrease them.

“I don’t think we’ve thought through the risks clearly enough to warrant a change,” Councilor Amy Valentine (D-Ward 5) said.

Councilor Timothy Carpenter (D-Ward 1) said changing the traffic would actually force more cars to travel in front of the Oval residences.

Councilor Chris Jackson (D-Ward 6), who lives on Oak Street, a one-way street, said people tend to speed more on one-way streets.

Councilor George Rabideau (R-Ward 3) said the existing bike path already serves as a recreation area for non-motorized traffic.

Councilor Amy Valentine (D-Ward 5) said she was concerned about how much it would cost to convert the road and how it would be enforced.

Councilor Timothy Carpenter (D-Ward 1) wanted to know if emergency vehicles would be hampered by one-way traffic.

Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem James Calnon (I-Ward 4), who was chairing Thursday’s meeting in the absence of Mayor Donald Kasprzak, who was out of town, noted that few accidents occur on the oval. Link

Oh well, it was worth the effort and the fight will continue.

Sometimes I Wear a Tie

May 29th, 2008 · No Comments · Adirondack Life

How To Tie a tie with the ‘Plattsburgh’ knot

Seems like “Business-casual” is here-to-stay. For most of my life, putting on a tie only happened as part of donning a “uniform”. Early on, this meant special occasions when I would have to wear a suit – graduations, weddings, funerals, etc. (I have to shamefully admit, after “Saturday Night Fever” came out, there was a thankfully brief moment when ties weren’t required). Later, the “uniforms” were mostly work-related.

Now it is sort of back to the special occasion status, the Adirondack lifestyle (North Country) is decidedly casual. Ran across this video and now maybe I’ve found a reason to reexamine my tie collection.

The “Plattsburgh” knot is named after the small town in up-state New York where Thomas Fink, inventor of the knot and co-author of the book “The 85 ways to tie a tie“, is born. In contrast to its narrow close relative the “St. Andrew”, the “Plattsburgh” produces a symmetric knot characterized by a broad cone with a narrow opening.

I guess you could say that this is a classic example of North Country brain-drain. Interestingly, Fink is a theoretical physicist and also author of the mini-classic, “The Man’s Book“. Cool.
