Plattsburgh International to Lose Big Sky

December 19th, 2007 · 2 Comments · News

Whoa! Look what I just read on TU The Buzz Business News:

Big Sky ending all upstate air service

The Billings, Mont.-based regional carrier, which flew in the Northeast and Midwest as Delta Connection, will end that service Jan. 7, it announced Wednesday afternoon.

The company blamed bad weather, weak revenue and high fuel prices for its decision.

The move leaves communities from Plattsburgh and Saranac Lake to Watertown, Massena and Ogdensburg without regular air service. Plattsburgh does have twice-weekly flights to Florida.

Earlier this week, Big Sky confirmed it would end its Boston-Albany flights on Jan. 7, three days after Colgan Air, flying as US Airways Express, ends its own service on the route. Albany airport officials said they’re seeking another carrier to serve the route. (Link)

Plattsburgh International Airport Highlighted at Home Show

March 11th, 2007 · 4 Comments · News

The new and improved Plattsburgh International Airport will be the main focus of attention at the upcoming Montreal National Home Show. I’m not a huge fan of this type of promotion, but some still swear by traditional methods. The results of a voluntary survey of attendees will be “directly used by the chamber in its continuing air service development efforts.” It’s not just marketing science, but an added bonus, as those “inquiries” could also be used in a fancy tourism CPI formula!

The one page website put up for the airport seems a bit weak considering almost $200,000 in “community support” has been collected to promote this venture. What we really need is for the spokesperson of the home show to let us use her picture on the site. Of course, that might be false advertising.

Travelers heading to or from the Adirondacks or Champlain Valley may find that Plattsburgh is a viable choice – someday. Till then, the best airport choices remain Burlington – VT (BTV), Albany – NY (ALB), or Montreal – QC (YUL). The notable exception, for the moment, is the Adirondack Regional Airport. Last I checked, Continental was still offering $78 Round-trip fares between Albany and Saranac Lake. That is an awesome deal!

Bargain Airfare to Adirondack Airport

January 10th, 2007 · 1 Comment · Destination Marketing, News

Update: This airfare is no more.

Without going into the boring specifics, heh heh, there’s a move afoot to aid the Adirondack Regional Airport with some marketing help. Specifically this means helping Commutair – a Plattsburgh-based operator for Continental Connection – with promoting their bargain fare between Saranac Lake and Albany, NY.

Continental Flight Deal - Albany - Saranac Lake

$78 Round-trip !! Irregardless of who, or what, or why, that is a great deal. These are one-way flights of 40 minutes.

I’ve found this rate available through the end of March. A quick way to get up here for a weekend? Rental cars are available for as little as $38/day. Some hotels or resorts should jump on this with some packaging which included transportation… Anyway, things are so slow, I’ll bet most hoteliers would send out a ride for free.

Update:

1/17/07 – My buddy found a round-trip to Melbourne, Australia – leaving from Saranac Lake! It actually was the cheapest option we could find – $1682 total.

Compare to Adirondack Trailways, Albany – Lake Placid $60.50 Round-trip, 4 hours each way.
