A Message to all Adirondack Spring Hikers

Spring conditions reign in the North Country. Recent rains have not been enough to call for a formal mud advisory, but there are still concerns regarding trail conditions. Many Canadians have been observed heading South and recent strengthening of the Loonie has everyone looking for a big rush. In anticipation of a busy couple of weekends, the Region 5 NYS DEC has targeted Canadian traffic with some general reminders in regards to hiking and camping in the Adirondacks. I think this is a good bit to spread around in general.

Ausable Point Campground Goes Rustic

DEC ANNOUNCES TERMINATION OF ALL ELECTRIC HOOKUPS AT AUSABLE POINT CAMPGROUND

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today that Ausable Point Campground will discontinue electrical services for the 2006 season. According to DEC, the current service is outdated and no longer complies with required safety standards. This is one of three state operated campgrounds on the New York shore of Lake Champlain. How this will impact the camping experience remains to be seen.

Update: Barnes Pond – Rambling Around the Sable Highlands

New trail opens onto wilderness vista

In 2002, Governor George Pataki put forth his goal of preserving over 1 million new acres of open space over the next decade. Early this year, he made a significant step toward that goal by announcing the purchase of over 100,000 acres of land located in the northern region of Franklin and Clinton Counties.
