Sable Highlands Recreation Proposals Include Improving Camping, Hiking, Fishing and Mountain Biking

April 30th, 2009 · 2 Comments · News

Public Invited to Offer Input at May 6 Meeting in Saranac

A new draft plan for recreational uses of the Sable Highlands in the northeastern Adirondacks includes proposals to construct camping sites, improve old and create new hiking trails, enhance fishing access and open two new mountain biking routes, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Betsy Lowe announced today.

The Sable Highlands Conservation Easement Lands consist of approximately 84,000 acres of land in the towns of Ellenburg and Saranac in Clinton County, and Bellmont and Franklin in Franklin County.

“The plan outlines extensive and varied recreational opportunities, including motorized recreation, on the Sable Highlands Conservation Easement Lands,” said Regional Director Lowe. “DEC is pleased to have worked with Chateaugay Woodlands and the Nature Conservancy in developing public access on these lands, while protecting the natural resources and retaining timber management jobs.”

Bull Moose vs. Car

April 30th, 2009 · 5 Comments · News

I’m sure all my attentive “followers” noted this item:

Moose vs. Car Tweet

So, a guy I know (hard not to know everyone around here) was coming back from Bingo at Akwesasne last Sunday night.  Apparently it is a regular thing for he and his wife – huh, I would have never guessed.  Anyway, they were heading South on Route 374 and at the hilly, windy section missed hitting a moose by inches.  Being the kind of guy that he is, he immediately turned around to warn off any approaching motorists.  Too late, the next car hit the moose head-on at speed.  I heard it was a kid driving with Grandma.

I inquired about this and got the following confirmation from NYS DEC:

The moose was hit at approximately 1:28am, west of Sunset Rd between Merrill and Lyon Mountain.  The 900 lb bull moose was killed by the impact.  The car received extensive damage and the driver had minor injuries – complaints of head pains – but was not transported to the hospital.  This has been the first moose-vehicle colision in the area this year, and the last accident was almost a year ago.

On a side note, I almost got creamed several times yesterday on my bike by BAD DRIVERS.  Best to slow down and take things easy.

Lake Champlain Beaches

April 29th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Adirondack Life

The last few days of unseasonably warm weather has started what I would call “Beach Fever”. My personal favorite is Point au Roche, followed by Ausable Point.

Here are the public beaches on the New York side of Lake Champlain.

There are a handful of other small beaches, but they are either “secret” or limited to local residents. So, does anyone want to join me for some fun at the beach?
