Adirondack and Northern New York Wind Farms

Wind TurbineSince the creation of the wind farms on the Tug Hill Plateau, interest in developing more wind turbines in the North Country has recently grown. Our local and national needs for renewable and clean energy, along with the economic benefit incentive has made this an attractive opportunity for consideration. The issue is not without controversy and the many interest groups are quite vocal and active. Treehugger posted an interesting analysis of bird mortality related to wind turbines. Rather than debunk the argument used by anti-turbine proponents, it helps place the data used in context.

Trumpeter Swan – Status and Origin Unknown, but apparently tasty

Trumpeter SwanA once nearly extinct Trumpeter Swan has been seen near the Moody Bridge in Tupper Lake. First sighted on Monday March 20th by Charlcie Delahanty, the bird has been seen several times over the last week. According to the Trumpeter Swan Society, this is North America’s largest waterfowl and one of our rarest native birds. Nearly lost to hunting and habitat loss, the Trumpeter Swan has made a comeback but still have not returned to much of their traditional range. The big news is that the Adirondacks is not this swan’s typical range.

Breaking News – Local Paper Joins Web 2.0

Web 2.0 Meme MapA local subversive (I mean that in a positive way) at the Anti-press Ezine noted the local paper has entered the Web 2.0 era and introduced a Blog in its product offerings. I have to admit, I’ve subscribed to Foxy’s feed. He is after all, “one of the North Country’s best-known pundits, raconteurs and general characters.” Gee, who’d have known?
