New York Tourism On The Rise

September 8th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Destination Marketing

I think tourism is worth investing more in. And not just because I work in the industry. We got some interesting research last month, here’s the first official announcement.

Empire State Development ANNOUNCES 9 PERCENT increase in direct tourism spending for New York State in 2007

Tourism industry growth exceeds $50 billion mark for first time

Empire State Development (ESD) today announced a 9 percent increase in direct tourism spending for New York State in 2007. Last year visitors spent $51 billion in the local economy, according to a study commissioned by the Department of Economic Development’s Division of Tourism. This includes a $44 billion contribution to the State’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a 12 percent increase that exceeds the State’s overall GDP growth by 5 percent.

A vital and growing component of the State’s economy, tourism spending has seen exceptional growth for four consecutive years, with the growth rate accelerating over 2005 (8.6%) and 2006 (7.2%). As the ninth largest employer in the state, tourism supported 672,000 jobs, or 6 percent of all employment during 2007, with a total associated income of $26 billion. Tourism generated $6.8 billion in state and local taxes.

A Motorless Movement

June 3rd, 2008 · 3 Comments · News

The NYS DEC announced the formation of an interagency “Quiet Waters Working Group for the Adirondack Park”.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis and Adirondack Park Agency (APA) Chairman Curt Stiles today announced the formation of an interagency “Quiet Waters Working Group for the Adirondack Park.” The working group will evaluate lakes, ponds and rivers in the Park for potential designation as “quiet water,” meaning that motorized craft would be prohibited.

The working group will be comprised of staff from DEC and APA, and will actively solicit input from local officials, community groups, outfitters, sportsmen, and other stakeholders.

Alright everyone, form a circle, join your hands, and let’s do some inputting!

“There are too few places in the Adirondacks where paddlers can experience the tranquility of a motorless water body,” Commissioner Grannis said. “With the increasing popularity of paddling, DEC wants to explore the possibility of expanding ‘quiet waters’ opportunities. This is part of our effort to increase opportunities for all recreational users of the Adirondacks. DEC is committed to involving local communities, outfitters, sportsmen and paddlers in this process.”

Local Blogosphere Gains Voices

April 14th, 2008 · No Comments · News

This morning met me with an announcement that the Plattsburgh Press Republican has launched an “online magazine“. Just goes to show you that anyone can get some airtime through self-publishing. Interesting how they decided to off-shore it from their newspaper site, but maybe it helps with keeping the content focused.

Anyway, our Plattsburgh “scene” just about doubled with the addition of about 8 blogs. All about economic development. This should be fun.
