Lodge v. Inn – Close Battle Mirror Lake Wins

January 8th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Destination Marketing

I know all you jet-setting leisure travelers have been waiting all year for The List to come out – well, here it is:

T+L 500 World’s Best Hotel 2009

Lake Placid - View from the Lake Placid Lodge

Lake Placid - View from the Lake Placid Lodge

These sorts of places, even if they were within my meager budget, would not be my choice for a travel experience.  But that’s just me.  I have no idea how these were chosen or if the voting is Carter-approved, but I’d be willing to bet a shoe-shine and valet-parking that most any “willing” hotel could make this gargantuan list.

Maybe I’m just being cynical.

In any case, two of our local standouts have made the list.  The Mirror Lake Inn and the Lake Placid Lodge both get a mention.  The Inn beat the Lodge by just shy of one point.  Clearly MLI’s superior PR tactics gave them the extra edge in beating what I would say is the nicest place within the Blue Line.  One thing for sure, I’ll take an 84 in Lake Placid over a 95 in India any day.

Update: Comfort Inn gets OK for rebuild
Comfort Inn Complex to Reopen by Summer
Comfort Inn lawsuit filed

So, our routine trip to the hardware store was interupted by FIRE.  According to Dwight, the cook at Perkins, the fire started in the pool/sauna area after some type of power surge.  When we arrived on the scene, only the southern end of the complex was noticeably burning (Huge flames leaping into the air).  Soon we saw emergency response from Keeseville, Saranac, Chazy, Beekmantown….  Despite their efforts, the fire quickly spread to the lobby area and finally all the through Legends (the bar) and into Perkins.  I’d say the whole place is done.

Here’s a quick-look, a video, and a slideshow, more pictures after the jump:

Bad Apple Season in Saranac Lake

September 19th, 2008 · 6 Comments · Destination Marketing

Bad AppleIt’s apple season in the North Country.  Did you know that I live in the McIntosh Apple Capital?  Well, it’s true, I’m surrounded by apples.  At this time of year, cider and donuts RULE.

Funny thing though, I’ve always had this silly song in my head every time bunches of apples are mentioned.  I always thought that this was just a way to get a girl on the rebound.

One bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch girl.
Oh, I don’t care what they say
I don’t care what you heard.
