Spring Snow Storm Warning Ignored

April 16th, 2007 · News

Today’s Press Republican reports:

Fatal Accident
Plattsburgh-based State Police reported one person died in a one-car accident at about 5:17 p.m. in the south-bound lane of Interstate 87 just north of Exit 34 in Keeseville.

Second Assistant Fire Chief David Perky of the Keeseville Fire Department confirmed one woman was killed in the accident and a two-month old infant was in critical condition.

“She was gone before we got there,” he said.

He said the woman was in the back seat and was not wearing a seatbelt. She is believed to have been caring for the critically injured infant.

Two other children and one adult were also injured.

The accidents victims are Hasidic Jews and are not believed to be local, Perky said. A Montreal transport van came to retrieve the dead woman’s body, Perky said.

“Road conditions were absolutely terrible,” he said.

Tragedy for sure.

Question: What two events has the media been hyping for the last few days?

Answer: Record-breaking Spring Nor’easter and Governor Corzine not wearing a seatbelt.

I know for a fact that this storm and associated hazards was well known to any person conscious in the Northeastern part of this continent. I also know that at 5pm yesterday the storm was at its absolute worst in this region. Why would anyone put themselves, their family, and emergency workers at risk by driving the Adirondack Northway? An unrestrained baby?! This accident should never have happened.

Update: Apparently this was one of two accidents last night. Both blamed on driving too fast during the storm. And, both accidents involved not wearing seat belts.

Adirondack Daily Enterprise News Archives

April 10th, 2007 · News

Update: Since this post was originally written, the archives of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise are now Permalinks.  They are now the Best Newspaper in the Adirondacks!

Question: Are there any permanent archives of ADE articles online? Thanks.

Answer: Not at this time.

Migrated to del.icio.us/adirondacks recently. Pretty sweet handle. All the imported bookmarks were not shared so I’ve had to go through each one. Laborious, but interesting. Somehow I never noticed that the Adirondack Daily Enterprise only has articles online for 14 days. No archives. How lame is that? The above Q/A is from an email exchange with the “Webmaster”.

It is a real shame that some of the best reporting about the region is lost after 14 days. Not to mention the serious loss of Adirondack search engine mojo. How can a newspaper in the Adirondacks, specializing in Adirondack news, rank lower than this site for Adirondack News?

Travel 2.0 Eco-system

April 10th, 2007 · Destination Marketing

Got tipped to the Web 2.0 Eco-System:

Web 2.0 Eco-system

I don’t really buy into the Alexa stuff, but it is a benchmark of sorts. I would agree with this assessment:

There are lots of problems with this slide, the first being the accuracy of Alexa’s traffic data, which is highly disputed. But as long as Alexa is equally wrong for every Website, that shouldn’t too big a deal, especially if all you want to know is the relative value of one site over another. The bigger problem is equating eyeballs with dollars. Not every visitor is worth the same.

Another problem I see is equating a service like Blogger with something like Wikipedia.

What I do see here is a list of Web 2.0 tools for the destination marketer. Here’s my take:

Top Tier: YouTube and Wikipedia offer the biggest bang for buck. MySpace and Blogger both are better off replaced with a self-hosted blog powered by WordPress.

Photo Sharing: Flickr

Getting the Word Out, Pinging, Sharing: del.cio.us and/or Technorati for tagging and sharing your world, Bloglines as intelligence HQ, all feeds through Feedburner.

If you’ve got extra time and energy, add a Squidoo lens or two.

The big giant missing pieces are Google Maps and Google Earth. The stuff going on in these communities is simply unbelievable. Have you seen My Maps? View in KML?! Think of the possibilities.

Update: Seth’s right on track, but I would still recommend going the extra mile to register your own domain and self-host your blogsite.
